Earthquake Insurance and Coverage
The earthquake and resulting tsunami earlier this month in Japan have left indelible images of destruction and loss. Although it was one of the 5 worst quakes of the last 100 years, it happened in a country where earthquakes are a part of life - as they are for us here in California - and where state of the art technology is used to protect people and property.

Disasters can happen at any time and have tragic consequences for our lives, homes and businesses. It's more than worthwhile to take a few minutes to see how well protected you are. Those with proper insurance overage can rebuild and carry on, but what about those without it?

In California we live with fault lines in the earth's crust. Scientific studies show that the mild quakes we experience regularly are only building up to an inevitable major occurrence. Homeowners tend to comfort themselves with the fact they their homes are fully insured. But how many realize that earthquake damage and destruction is not covered by a basic home insurance policy? Spend a little time going over your policy to check if you are covered from this kind of disaster. We can't control the fault lines, but we can protect ourselves from the damage that quakes cause by ensuring we have adequate earthquake insurance.

Other Natural Disasters
Floods, fires and other kinds of calamitous events pose a great danger to our homes. Getting your home valued and taking insurance to cover that amount is not enough. If the worst happens, this kind of cash value insurance will not cover the cost of rebuilding your home. The hundreds of thousands of dollars you may need to pay from your own pocket could ruin you financially. If you haven't heard of or thought about replacement-cost home insurance, now is the time to do so. This type of policy will cover the actual cost of rebuilding a home and ensure that a home can, if the worst happens, be rebuilt with no financial distress.

What About Your Business?
The same kind of issues occur in the case of business insurance. You may have insured your business against all kinds of physical damage that could affect or stop business operations, but what if something happens that leaves your office, store or factory untouched stops work? Suppose an extended power outage causes your perishable inventory to be ruined? Or transportation stoppages prevent you from receiving or shipping goods? Are you protected from the losses you will incur? Check your insurance policy and see if you are covered against all the possible eventualities that could cause you losses or even the loss of your business.

And what about errors and omissions? No matter how careful you are, mistakes can happen anytime. And even this most innocent and seemingly minor of slipups can result in claims for damages suffered due to inadequate work or negligence. A responsible business owner will have general liability insurance, but in most cases this policy will not cover damage claims for errors and omissions. For this you will need Errors and Omissions (E&O) Insurance. This kind of policy will cover owners, employees and subcontractors against claims for damages. All it takes is reading the newspapers to see the kind of huge damages that can result from even the smallest of mistakes.
