Is your home/condo insured and fully covered?
DID YOU REPLACE YOUR WOOD ROOF?

Save $200 a year on average with a non-wood roof on your homeowners policy. Just call us and send us a receipt or picture and we will order the change for you.

Building codes in almost all of Southern California have not allowed wood roofs for many years. This is due to fire danger. Many Northern California cities require new expensive fire retardant wood roofs. They are still a higher fire risk than a composition shingle, slate or tile roof.

IS YOUR HOUSE UNDER CONSTRUCTION, RENTED OR VACANT?

Lots of our clients remodel or make additions to their home but forget to tell us. Notifying your insurance broker of the change of occupancy is required by your policy. If you do not notify us within 30 days your claim may not be covered. We can solve all of these problems for you. Make sure and consult with us on how to protect yourself.

PART OF A HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION?

Most condominiums and townhouse associations do not cover the inside of your unit on the master association policy. They also do not cover your personal liability, loss of use or rents and personal property. Send us your HOA's CCR's and By laws for a free review of your unique needs. A Condo owners policy is usually under $500 a year.

DRIVING FOR A RIDE SHARING SERVICE?
Did you know that your auto policy doesn't cover you?

Regulators and insurers are trying to figure out how to handle this new ridesharing business model. The first step is the dept. of insurance authorizing and approving a policy that covers ridesharing. The first company has been approved to start doing this and I expect others will follow. But don't expect to be able to pay an extra $50 and add the a taxi driver rider to the policy you have now.

In January 2015, California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones approved a filing that helps drivers of Transportation Network Companies (TNCs), like Uber and Lyft add coverage to their personal auto policy. This will help them cover damage incurred during Period 1: the time when the driver is seeking a passenger, or responding to a hail.

Currently TNCs must provide drivers $1 million in liability (in California) for the duration where a passenger is involved. TNCs are also required by law to provide some (a lesser amount) of coverage during Period 1 in case the driver's own personal auto insurance does not provide coverage, but this is rarely adhered to.

However, the Taxicab, Limousine & Paratransit Association (TLPA) has criticized the approval. TLPA feel that drivers and the public continue to be at risk, as this hybrid policy does not cover instances of Period 1 outside of Uber or Lyft's mobile application platform.

Blue Shield & Sutter Health sign a 2-year contract
Palo Alto Medical Clinic is a member of Sutter Health!

The fact that Health Plan providers and Hospital Chains constantly bicker over prices, terms and conditions is well known. The latest duo to join this list is Sutter Health which runs a chain of 23 Hospitals in Northern California, and Blue Shield. The two parted ways on Dec 31st 2014 citing steep costs quoted by Sutter. According to a Blue Shield spokesman, Sutter has been steadily driving healthcare costs over the years. Sutter has faced several lawsuits in the last couple of years for the same reason.

However, on Jan 30th 2015, the two buried the hatchet and signed a new two-year agreement effective February 1. This would help 280,000 health plan members of Blue Shield who were left without any coverage for a month, avail medical care from Sutter. Understandably, specifics of the agreement are confidential but Blue Shield was pleased to say that their customers' legal rights have been protected.
